Abstract
Abstract During the long periods of interaction with the natural environment, many Chinese cities with river networks have developed unique spatial forms, living patterns and cultural dispositions. The study intends to examine the public space between water networks of these cities, setting the ancient city Suzhou as a special case. It begins with a review of the historical evolution of the river networks in Suzhou City , followed by an explanation of the origin of the main idea of urban planning for Suzhou City , which has centered on the river networks. The study further reveals the forming pattern, historical layout and morphological characters of public space between water networks. Based on the above conclusions, the study eventually makes suggestions on the practice that can be adopted to protect and develop the public space between water networks in Suzhou .
